Sonographic features of lethal multiple pterygium syndrome at 14 weeks

Lethal multiple pterygium syndrome is a rare inherited disorder. Previous reports suggest that the diagnosis may be based on prenatal sonographic demonstration of severe limb flexion, absence of fetal motion, and a large cystic hygroma in the second and third trimesters. We present the sonographic features and postmortem features of a fetus with lethal multiple pterygium syndrome at 13 weeks of gestation, which shows that the condition can possibly be diagnosed in the first trimester of pregnancy. Maternal serum activin A and inhibin A in trisomy 18 pregnancies at 10–14 weeks

In 45 cases of trisomy 18 and 493 control pregnancies at 10–14 weeks of gestation, maternal serum inhibin A, total activin A, free β-hCG and PAPP-A were measured. In the trisomy 18 pregnancies the median values were 0.74 MoM for inhibin A, 1.23 MoM for activin A, 0.38 MoM for free β-hCG and 0.16 MoM for PAPP-A. The degree of deviation from normal in the levels of inhibin and activin is small in comparison with free β-hCG and PAPP-A and they are therefore unlikely to be of value in improving the sensitivity of 90% for a 1% false-positive rate achieved by screening with fetal nuchal translucency and maternal serum free β-hCG and PAPP-A. Gender impact on first trimester markers in Down syndrome screening

The influence of fetal gender on the level in the first trimester of the serological markers alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A) and free beta human chorionic gonadotropin (βhCG) and on nuchal translucency is described for 2637 singleton pregnancies with normal outcome. Mean log MoM values for pregnancies with female and male fetuses were calculated using regression of log marker values on gestational age expressed as crown rump length and on maternal weight. Non-point source analysis of a railway bridge area using statistical method：Case study of a concrete road-bed

In an effort to protect the quality of the water system, interest in non-point source pollution is increasing. Recently, studies of non-point sources pollution are continuing in relation to various land- use areas, but such studies have not been fully conducted in railway facility sites. Using monitoring data of railway bridge area with concrete road-bed, the runoff characteristics, pollutant unit loads, and first flush criteria were assessed. Railway bridge area with concrete road-bed typically show the first flush effect, and the pollutant unit load was determined to be higher than other public facilities areas. Further, the first flush criteria show an effective rainfall amount of 7 mm. In other words, from the runoff of railway facilities, considerable amounts of non-point source pollutants are occurred, indicating the need to create best management practices which are adequate for railway facility sites.     

浅析环评中重金属第一类污染物源强计算——以电镀企业为例

以电镀企业为例,解读相关标准、规范要求,剖析当前环评工作中重金属第一类污染物排放源强计算存在的问题并探索解决方案。研究发现,由于废水分质分类处理,环评中第一类污染物源强分析节点出现了困难,同时验收监测又常以总排口为节点,导致监测排放量大于环评预测的允许排放量。分析认为,除了有更严格的地方法规,第一类污染物排放源强应以车间或生产设施排放口为监控节点,为克服车间排放口监控位置选取的困难,环评中可根据物料衡算法推算更严格的排放标准,在总排1：7实施实际监控。环评和验收监测的相关计算方法要实现统一,以便环境管理。     

First trimester diagnosis of sirenomelia

We present a case of sirenomelia diagnosed on a first trimester ultrasound at 10 weeks' gestation and confirmed on 3D-ultrasound and MRI. The pregnancy was terminated at 15 gestational weeks and the post-mortem examination, including RX and microscopy, is presented. The sirenomelia sequence is a rare and lethal anomaly characterized by fusion, rotation, hypotrophy or atrophy of the lower limbs and severe urogenital abnormalities leading to oligohydramnios in the second half of pregnancy. Our case illustrates that the diagnosis of sirenomelia can be reliably made in the first trimester. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
